The First Half of My Life

Ever since childhood, I was gifted with intelligence and showered with my family’s affection. In primary school, I was always among the top students. It was during those years that I noticed something unusual with my left ear’s hearing. I kept it a secret, never telling my family. Our financial situation was not strong, and I felt I could not burden them with medical expenses. Deep inside, I struggled with pain and frustration.

I went on to attend one of Taiwan’s best secondary schools, Hsinchu High School, during my secondary years. After graduation, My family and relatives encouraged me to study medicine in university. To be honest, with our limited finances, the National Defense Medical College, which provided a full government subsidy, was the only realistic option. I was confident I could pass the entrance exam, but after much inner struggle, I chose not to apply. I knew that even if I succeeded in the written test, I would ultimately be eliminated at the medical screening because of my hearing loss. Eventually, I chose another fully subsidized option, National Taiwan Normal University, as my final choice.

After graduation, I was fortunate to pass the exam to join the CTOC, working as life insurance specialist. In 1995, when Taiwan launched its National Health Insurance, I became a branch manager of the National Health Insurance Bureau. I had to oversee four to five areas, constantly attending meetings with insurers, medical institutions, and policyholders. Often, I could not hear clearly what others were saying. I had to rely on assistants to repeat their words before I could respond. This painful struggle went on for over ten years—words cannot fully capture the difficulty.

The Second Half: Even More Wonderful

After retiring from public service, I devoted myself to charity and clan association work. By then, I no longer hid my hearing loss. I openly acknowledged it, held a disability card, and people simply accepted it as normal.

Last year, something changed. My daughter’s mother-in-law, Madam Huang from Tainan, began using Clinico hearing aids and found them extremely effective. With the encouragement of my family, I decided to try Clinico hearing aids as well.

I purchased mine from Hearing Specialist Mr. Lin Hsien-han. After he left the company, Ms. Lin Yu-chieh took over my care. Both were highly professional, and their warm service impressed me deeply.

During my follow-up visits, Ms. Lin patiently explained every detail over and over until I fully understood. Thanks to her care and Clinico’s technology, I have once again rediscovered the beauty of sound in my later years. The world feels vibrant and colourful, and I am living a truly fulfilling second half of life.
